Although we usually used formocresol as a pulpotomy agent in treatment of deciduous
pulp due to its high rate of success, it had been shown ineffective results in pulpotomy
sites and systemic toxic reactions of mutagenecity and carcinogen. The purpose of this
study was to measure the systemic absorption and distribution of formocresol at
pulpotomy sites in dogs. Pulpotomies were performed on the anterior teeth of dogs,
using formocresol with 14C-formaldehyde The animals were sacrificed
after tissue samples were removed from the liver, kidney, lung, heart and bile obtaining
blood and urine samples.
The obtained results were as follows ;
1. The results confirmed systemic distribution and absorption of
14C-formaldehyde at formocresoltreated pulpotomy sites.
2. Investigations treated more teeth might show a larger amount of systemic
formaldehyde absorption.
3. The relative distributions of 14C-formaldehyde in liver, kidney, and
lung were more than those found in heart.
4. The systemic distribution volume of 14C-formaldehyde ranged from
90% to 109.6% B.W.
5. Total systemic absorption of 14C-formaldehyde ranged from 1.65% to
3.25%.
